about

This is a collection of some of my favorite chamber music I've had the honor of playing with my friends in my graduate studies at the University of Maine. I plan to release these gradually and in also a sporadic nature.

In memory of my grandmother. She passed away recently and I never got the chance to show her what I have been doing for the past 8 years or so since she's lived so far away from me and traveling is expensive. She meant a lot to me and this piece is to be in her memory. Howard Royston Baker, guitar; Nathan Hackworth, marimba. A chorale solo by Evelyn Glennie, adapted for guitar and marimba by yours truly.

We have a special medieval epigram from an anonymous Serbian poet of the Balkans. This chamber piece is the special single release with Eric Schessler, baritone/tenor voice and I do some marimba thing. It's warm and lush, that's what I love about it.

Most of these recordings really are basically a pairing of various instruments with the marimba. I am using a concert marimba, which is incredibly different than the antique marimbas of Africa, Venezuela, and Mexico. These are all speculations of course because the marimba's unique origin is unknown. But, many believe that the marimba has it's origins in South East Asia, and others believe it came from Africa in the 14th century. Around the medieval period.

That's where the epigram "Sta Vidis" by Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic comes into the picture for this album. If I'm going to play a piece of music on an instrument that's from the 14th century then I'm going to play that song too - it's meditative and very pleasing to listen to.

Then I come into another kind of fun and nonsensical character in Yuyama's "Divertimento" with Elizabeth Downing, flute, and myself on marimba. So much fun and I get to play through a mysterious 6-mallet chorale section in the middle. Then blitz fire to the end.

This collection is dedicated to my family. They are the most supportive of me. It is the beginning of a series of releases and I will keep you updated.
